Microdermabrasion Microdermabrasion is a technique in
which a stream of chemically-inert aluminum oxide crystals are
passed across the surface of the skin to remove its outer layers,
without causing damage to any deeper layers. Unlike laser
resurfacing (which can cause long-lasting pigmentation changes of
the skin, and even scarring) microdermabrasion causes little
discomfort, has no potential serious side effects and has a very
short recovery time.
Not surprisingly, the results seen with microdermabrasion are not
as dramatic as those seen with laser surfacing. However,
microdermabrasion results compare favorably with and may be even
longer lasting than those seen with superficial chemical peels.
Microdermabrasion can improve:
Fine lines and wrinkles
Dull, roughened, dry skin
Sallow complexion
Age spots
Irregular pigmentation (skin discoloration)
Enlarged pores
Mild acne scarring
Stretch marks
After an initial consultation with one of our
dermatologists, microdermabrasion is usually performed by one of
our skilled staff. The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes. A
gentle cleanser is provided to aid in removing any residual
crystals of aluminum oxide. Patients generally leave the office
looking only slightly pink, and can easily resume their usual
activities for that day. There is no need for dressings or special
makeup. Pinkness and peeling may persist for a day or two. For two
days before and after the procedure, products such as Retin A,
Renova, Avita, alpha hydroxy acids or exfoliants should be
avoided, as they may more easily irritate the skin. Gentle daily
cleansing and application of a moisturizer is all the
post-operative care that is required. Makeup may be worn, if
desired, any time after the procedure.
Generally, five or six microdermabrasion treatments are needed for
maximal benefit. It may take three treatments to start seeing
substantial effects. Treatments are usually spaced one to two
weeks apart. Maintenance treatments may then be needed every two
to three months.
